Sounds like the choke unloader is out of adjustment....
when the choke knob is pulled all the way out, the choke plate should be open just a little bit.. if the plate closes all the way,the engine is starting to flood. next time you try to start it,pull the choke all the way out, then push it back in about 1/4 of the way...
if the unloader is out of adjustment, the engine will run like it should until it warms up.
